Last year we rasied money to build a well in Sierra Leone. They don't have clean water to drink and lots of people get sick and die from it every year because some people don't get enough food to eat and they can't fight off the sickness.
Samuel Menyongar works for Touch The Nation. He is from Sierra Leone and has experienced what people in Africa have to live like. They have lots of challenges to overcome. He travel's around the United States telling people how much help they need. He is trying to make a difference and change the world for the better.
Today he came to talk to us about his journey through life and what challenges Sierra Leone has to face. It was really fun, interesting, and informational all in one. I learned lots of things but my favorite was that Africans think that Americans are really generous but they also think some Americans have to much. I thought that was kind of funny! Also I thought that lots of kids under five die from drinking poluted water was kind of sad because they won't get the life they deserve. After his talk we gave him the big check for around $1,700, we took a picture with him aand after he shook our hands to thank us.
After all that I feel like I should help people in Sierra Leone. There are lots of ways to change Sierra Leone for the better. I was thinking maybe having a dress up week for whoever wants to dress up and if they do to bring a dollar and give that to Sierra Leone for thet schools. Also I was thinking a Drive to get things that the children need in Africa. The steps I would take to do this would be to advertise it. Hang up posters, talk over the annoncmrnts, and tell lots of people about it. But before all that I have to get an ok by an adult so I inform my teacher and the guidence consler. Just little things like that can help change the world for the better.
One thing that surprised me was that there schools don't have the things we do. Some don't even have desks they have benches, the floors aren't clean, and all they have are chalk boards. Also, another thing that surprised me was that that things here were was less than they are here. Cars are close to $20 a month, and for school it was close to $50 dollars for a kindergardener to go for the whole year.
I learned so much today but I can't wait to learn more!
